The Philly cheesesteak gets its name from its place of origin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is believed to have been created by Italian immigrants in the 1930s or 1940s. The sandwich consists of thinly sliced steak, usually ribeye, and melted cheese, typically provolone or American, served on a long, crusty roll. The sandwich quickly became popular in Philadelphia and eventually spread to other parts of the country. Today, it is a beloved American classic and a must-try for anyone visiting Philadelphia.

This twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak uses ground beef instead of sliced steak. This makes it more affordable and easier to cook but doesn’t sacrifice any of the flavor. Plus, it’s loaded with veggies like tri-color peppers, mushrooms, and onions, adding both nutrition and texture.

Speaking of nutrition, this recipe is low-carb and keto-friendly, with no added sugar or gluten (as long as you use a gluten-free spice mix). Plus, it’s packed with protein from the ground beef and cheese, helping to keep you full and satisfied.

Skillet Instructions:

-Thaw freezer meal overnight in the fridge.

-To cook, heat olive oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Separately preheat broiler.

-Add contents to the skillet, stirring and breaking meat apart, until beef is cooked through, vegetables are tender, and liquids are absorbed (about 10-15 minutes).

-Sprinkle the cheeses over top and set under the broiler until the cheeses are melted and starting to brown.

TIP:  Serve warm as is. Also good when served over lettuce cups, cauliflower rice or low-carb buns.
